A Little Background
A group of locals formed the Highlanders in 1958. It became a popular community theater group.
Their first performance was a minstrel show in Wellfleet. The first musical performed was Brigadoon, which, as we all know, took place in the highlands of Scotland, resulting in the group’s naming itself “The Highlanders”.
Bob Leblanc was in the Air Force at Truro, and he became interested in joining the group due to his drama training. Someone knew about Hazel Porche Gibson, who had been involved in theater for years. so the group now had some direction, if you will.
Beginning in 1958, the group continued to perform until the early 90’s, having put on about 30 musicals.
By their tenth anniversary they had put on these musicals:
- “Damn Yankees”
- “Finian’s Rainbow”
- “Flower Drum Song”
- “Plain and Fancy”
- “South Pacific”
- “The Music Man”
